Commodore's Message

www.poulsboyc.org

Aardvark I walk across the frozen lake in January and make my way to the top of a snow covered Lake Michigan, many notable long time Northwest YC members come to mind. I am lowering the flag for the second time this year to honor the passing of yet another Northwest YC member.

From the flag pole I look around to the shores below. F. E. Tries, Betty Quadracci ,Dick Casper & Christy Foote. come to my thoughts. We lost all of these dear, devoted members this year and there are many great stories & memories to be shared about all of these incredible people.

The Northwest YC was created to enhance the sport of sailing and yachting on Lake Michigan. This year our sailing fleets look very strong with all 4 fleets increasing their numbers by 1 to 5 boats.

The TRAP will continue as a training regatta for the X and Opti fleets on Lake Michigan and has become a hallmark event in the lake country.

This summer Jim Zaiser and his elite team of coaches will be heading up the sailing school program for Optis and X boats.

The Board of Directors is very happy to announce the acceptance of the Northwest YC to the WYA which currently holds an X boat Regatta and in the future will possibly hold an MC regatta. We are active members of the ILYA and the US Sailing Association where Northwest YC continues to have strong sailors representing our lake at various local and national regattas.

Beyond sailing, our social committee run by Nina Fiedler and Kim Schubert have many exciting events scheduled this summer for members to enjoy. I hope to see you out sailing, enjoying the lake and the many opportunities and gathering we have planned for the long awaited summer season.

I have had an incredible time growing up in the Cook Country and sailing on Lake Michigan. I have had the privilege of being a part of our wonderful club for many years and now I will serve as the 55th Northwest YC Commodore. My Grandfather Alf would be very proud that his 4 year old “E boat deck washer” finally made it to Commodore!

I look forward to my new responsibilities and want all of our members to make this year the year to get involved in the club. The Northwest YC Yacht Club thrives on member participation and involvement The time & energy we invest in our club will lead to many rewarding years to come. Enjoy every bit of your summer & sail wherever the wind may blow. See you on the water!
